To replace the cooling fan of the WPDKS80-30-1.5KW worm gear reducer, you need to follow the process of 'safe power off → remove the old fan → match the new fan → install and reset'. The core is to ensure that the wiring is correct and the installation is firm to avoid heat dissipation failure due to model mismatch or improper installation.

1. Preparation before replacement: confirm the model and tools to ensure safety

  1. To confirm the fan model and parameters, first record the key parameters of the old fan (to avoid buying by mistake):
  • Voltage: usually AC220V or 380V (check the fan motor nameplate, which is consistent with the power supply provided by the reducer);

  • Power: mostly 15-40W (low power fan, too large may cause circuit overload);

  • Installation dimensions: fan outer diameter (usually Φ80-120mm), fixed hole distance (hole center distance, such as 4-M4 screw holes, 50mm distance), shaft length (if it is a shaft-mounted fan).

    If the nameplate is unclear, you can refer to the reducer manual or contact the manufacturer to provide an adapted model (WPDKS80 is a small reducer, and the fans are mostly external axial flow fans).

  • Tools and Materials List
  • Tools: Phillips/slotted screwdriver, needle-nose pliers (for wire removal), electrical tape (insulation protection), wrench (if the fan is fixed with bolts), multimeter (optional, to detect motor continuity).

  • Materials: new fan (parameter matching), spare screws (if the old screws are rusty, it is recommended to replace them with stainless steel screws of the same specification), terminal blocks (if the original terminals are oxidized).

  • Safety precautions
  • The main power supply of the reducer must be cut off (pull out the plug or pull the switch), and use a test pen to confirm that there is no power to avoid electric shock;

  • Wait for the reducer and fan to cool to ambient temperature to prevent high temperature burns;

  • If the fan is connected to the motor wire, mark the wiring location (such as taking a photo to record it) to avoid subsequent wiring errors.


2. Disassemble the old fan: disassemble it step by step and protect the connecting cable

Step 1: Remove the fan guard (if applicable)

The cooling fan of the WPDKS80 reducer usually has a metal shield (to prevent foreign objects from being drawn in). The shield is fixed on the fan bracket or reducer housing with 2-4 screws. Use a screwdriver to unscrew the screws, remove the shield, and set it aside (be careful to save the screws).

Step 2: Disconnect the fan power cord

  • If the fan wire is connected to the reducer control box through a plug, simply unplug the plug;

  • If it is direct wiring (the wires are twisted together or connected to the terminal strip), use needle-nose pliers to loosen the terminal block (or unscrew the terminal screw), gently remove the wires, and wrap the exposed wire ends with electrical tape (to prevent short circuits).

    Tip: Use your mobile phone to take a photo of the wiring method (such as the corresponding colors of the live wire and neutral wire) in advance to avoid reversing the wiring of the new fan (fan reversal will lead to a decrease in heat dissipation efficiency).

Step 3: Remove the fan body

The fan is usually installed on the heat sink of the reducer or the motor end cover through 4 fixing screws:
  • Use a screwdriver to unscrew the fixing screw counterclockwise (if the screw is rusty, soak it with 1-2 drops of lubricating oil for a few minutes to avoid twisting the screw);

  • Gently remove the old fan, check whether there is dust or oil on the installation surface, and wipe it clean with a rag (make sure the new fan is installed snugly).

  • If the fan shaft and motor shaft are integrated (in rare cases), you need to loosen the jackscrew on the shaft first, and then remove the fan.


3. Install a new fan: Make sure the wiring is correct and firmly fixed.

Step 1: Check the new fan parameters and installation dimensions

Before installation, make sure that the voltage and power of the new fan are consistent with the old fan, and that the fixing hole position matches the mounting surface (the hole distance deviation must be ≤1mm, otherwise the hole needs to be expanded or a gasket must be added to avoid fan deformation caused by forced installation).

Step 2: Connect the power cord

  • Connect the wires according to the previously recorded wiring method (or instruction manual): the live wire (usually brown/red) is connected to the L terminal, the neutral wire (blue/black) is connected to the N terminal, and the ground wire (yellow-green) is connected to the ground terminal (if any);

  • After the wires are connected, wrap the joints with insulating electrical tape (or compress the terminals) to ensure there is no exposed metal to avoid short circuits;

  • If the fan rotates forward and reverse (reverse rotation of the axial flow fan will exhaust air in the opposite direction), you can first test the rotation by turning on the power (feel the air outlet to see if there is airflow. If there is no airflow, you need to replace the live wire and the neutral wire), and confirm that the rotation is correct before fixing it.

Step 3: Fix the fan body

  • Align the new fan with the installation hole, place it on the installation surface, and fix it initially with screws (do not tighten it too tightly). Adjust the fan position to ensure that there is no friction between the fan blades and the guard and the reducer housing (the gap is ≥3mm);

  • After confirming that the position is correct, tighten the screws in diagonal order (torque 5-8N·m, to avoid over-tightening causing deformation of the fan case) to ensure that the fan is not loose or shaking.

Step 4: Reinstall the guard

Buckle the shield back to the outside of the fan, align it with the mounting holes, and tighten the fixing screws to ensure that the shield is firm and not loose (to prevent the shield from vibrating and making noise during operation).

4. Post-installation test: Verify that the fan is functioning properly

  1. Power-on test run : Restore the power, start the reducer, observe whether the fan is running smoothly and there is no obvious abnormal sound (such as 'friction sound' or 'excessive buzzing sound'), and put your hand close to the air outlet to feel the air flow (it should be smooth and powerful).

  2. Check the sealing and safety : After running for 5-10 minutes, touch the fan motor housing (the temperature should be ≤60°C, no overheating), check whether there is heat or odor at the wiring, and confirm that there is no leakage of electricity or oil (if the fan is close to the oil seal, avoid contact of the wire body with lubricating oil).

  3. Linkage test : Run the reducer with load for 30 minutes. Use an infrared thermometer to measure the temperature of the reducer shell. It should be 5-10°C lower than before cleaning (indicating that heat dissipation is effective), and there is no continuous temperature rise.
