(1) Machined steel - Although there are many different mechanical properties, machinability and cost, machined steel is a very common material used in the production of gears, pinions and shafts.Steel is processed in various forms such as castings, forgings, cold rolled or hot rolled bar stock.Using relatively inexpensive cutting tools, high-precision gears can be produced by machining steel for high capacity and low noise.Machined steel can be heat treated to increase load capacity and possibly reduce the size of the gear set.After heat treatment, the gear can be machined again (hard hobbing, skiving, grinding, etc.) to account for distortion.However, each additional operation (heat treatment, grinding, etc.) adds to the tool and piece price.

(2) Powdered metal - the process of grinding metal, mixing it into powder, compacting it in a mold and then heating it in an oven.Powdered metal gears may offer a lower cost solution than machined steel.On the other hand, powder metal gears have lower load carrying capacity and cannot achieve tight tolerances compared to machined steel gears.

(3) Plastic Compared with steel, injection-molded plastic gears have about 10% higher load capacity, cost-effectively, and perform well in low-torque applications.Complex mold designs allow for weight savings compared to steel.

(4) Bronze - The use of bronze gears is highly application dependent.
