Advantages of helical gear reducer over spur gear educer

The disadvantage of spur gear reducers compared to helical gear reducers is that they produce vibration. Whether due to design, manufacture or deformation, some involute shape changes may occur simultaneously along the whole tooth surface. This will result in each tooth touching once, which is usually very firm. The resulting vibration will not only cause a large load on the gear, but also produce noise.

Another disadvantage of spur gear reducers is that in contact, the additional strength obtained by the engagement of two pairs of teeth is sometimes not available because the stress generated by the engagement of a single tooth in the cycle is limited.

Then helical gear reducer is not the same. Its helical gear can be regarded as a set of plate gear dislocation formed cylindrical gear. In this way, the contact of each plate is in different parts of the tooth profile, so as to compensate the error of each plate gear. This compensation function is very effective for the elasticity of the teeth and is also beneficial for the load strength.

In addition, manufacturing and assembling large numbers of thin spur gears is complex, difficult and uneconomical. Therefore, manufacturers make joint gears with teeth along the spiral direction. Although helical gears are not like spur gears, they produce poor axial force. But the advantages in reducing vibration and improving bearing strength far outweigh the disadvantages of axial thrust and a slight increase in manufacturing costs. Therefore, in the manufacture of gear reducer, helical gear is used instead of spur gear.
