What are the special precautions when changing oil for different types of reducers?

Although different types of reducers follow some general principles when changing oil, they also have their own special precautions.

1. General oil change principles

Before performing specific operations, please be sure to comply with the following general principles:

Power-off operation: Before changing the oil, the power supply to the equipment must be cut off to prevent accidental start-up and ensure safe operation.

Oil taboos: It is strictly prohibited to mix lubricants of different brands or models.

Oil selection: The specified lubricating oil should be selected according to the type of reducer and working environment (such as temperature, load). Commonly used is medium/heavy-duty industrial gear oil (such as L-CKC/L-CKD 220/320/460).

2. Special precautions for different types of reducers

1. Gear reducer (such as helical gear, bevel gear reducer)

This type of reducer is the most common type in the industry at present, and its oil change precautions are the most representative.

Timing of oil change: The most critical point is that the oil change should be carried out after the reducer is shut down and when the oil temperature still has residual heat (warm state). Because the viscosity of the oil will increase significantly after it is completely cooled, making it difficult to completely drain the dirty oil.

Oil change interval:

First oil change: After the new machine has been running for 300-500 hours for the first time, the first oil change must be performed to remove metal debris generated during the running-in period.

Routine oil change: Under normal operating conditions, it is usually replaced every 2000-3000 hours of operation or 6-12 months.

Harsh working conditions: If the machine is operated continuously in harsh environments such as high temperature, dust, and humidity, the oil change interval should be shortened to 1000-1500 hours.

2. Planetary reducer

The planetary reducer has a precise structure and requires higher lubrication.

Oil requirements: Heavy-duty industrial gear oil must be used, and extreme pressure gear oil with a commonly used viscosity grade of 220# or 320# is used.

Oil level check: After changing the oil, check the oil level to ensure it is between 1/2 and 2/3 of the oil level.

Oil change interval: similar to the gear reducer, change the oil after the first 500 hours of operation, and then every 2000-3000 hours or 1 year under normal operating conditions.

3. Cycloidal pinwheel reducer

The lubrication method of this type of reducer is special.

Lubrication method: Oil pool lubrication is usually used, that is, the oil level can be kept in the middle of the oil sight window.

Oil selection: 40# or 50# mechanical oil can be used at normal temperature. In order to improve performance and extend life, it is recommended to use 70# or 90# extreme pressure gear oil.

Vertical installation: For vertically installed cycloidal pinwheel reducers, special attention should be paid to preventing the oil pump from cutting off oil to avoid damage to internal components.
