The service life of SAF series reducers is bound to be shortened in low temperature environments. The lower the temperature, the more obvious the service life reduction is.
1. Core reasons for shortened lifespan
1. Lubricating oil has extremely poor fluidity
The viscosity of low-temperature oil increases sharply, the oil film becomes thinner or even cuts off, the dry friction of gears and bearings intensifies, and pitting, wear, and gluing appear in advance.
2. Metal cold brittleness + stress concentration
The low-temperature toughness of the box, gears, and shafts decreases, and micro-cracks are easily generated due to start-stop impacts and load fluctuations, leading to broken teeth and broken shafts in the long term.
3. Rapid aging and failure of seals
Ordinary rubber oil seals harden and lose elasticity at low temperatures, causing oil leakage and oil leakage frequently. Lack of oil directly shortens the life of the entire machine significantly.
4. Frequent high load starting shock
The low temperature starting resistance is large, the motor starts with heavy load, the transmission components bear double the instantaneous impact load, and the fatigue life is quickly overdrawn.
5. Internal water vapor condensation
After shutting down at low temperature, the cavity will cool down and condensation will form, causing the gear bearings to rust and accelerate failure.
2. Life attenuation amplitude at different temperatures
0℃ ~ -10℃: lifespan shortened by 15%~25%
-10℃ ~ -25℃: lifespan shortened by 30%~45%
-25℃ ~ -40℃: The life span is directly shortened by 50%~70%, and the failure rate increases sharply.
3. Parts are most likely to be damaged first (common problem with SAF)
The high-speed end bearing burns out first
Worm gear tooth surface wears rapidly
Input and output oil seal leakage and scrapped
Keyways and shaft heads are prone to cracking
4. Practical solutions for extending life at low temperatures
Replace low-temperature synthetic gear oil, special oil with pour point ≥-40℃
Under low temperature conditions, preheat without load for 3~10 minutes before putting on load.
Switch to low temperature resistant fluorine rubber seals
Selection enlarges the safety factor by 1.2~1.5 times
Avoid frequent forward and reverse rotations, emergency stops and starts
A brief summary: long-term use in subzero conditions will greatly reduce the service life of the SAF reducer. Just changing the oil will not work. It must be optimized in conjunction with startup, sealing, and load.
